Diagnosis and Assessment

Assessment is a key component of special education and education reform. Children are assessed individually to determine their eligibility for special education services and to ascertain learning needs. Formal assessment is the administration of standardized tests. The resulting data are comparative; the student’s level of functioning is described in relation to typical or average performance. The tests examine:

  • Learning aptitude (IQ level)
  • Nonverbal IQ Tests
  • Infant-Toddler Development Test for early intervention
  • Tests for autism and other developmental pervasive disorders
  • Achievement Tests: Formal reading, mathematics, written language, and language.
  • Adaptive behavior
  • Behavior in the classroom

Other assessments as deemed necessary are conducted and include: speech/language, physical therapy, auditory, neurological and/or psychiatric evaluations.
